A Corona dog needs to have certain distinct characteristics in order to be suitable for the task. This means a strong desire to hunt, great interest in objects, environmental strength, willingness to cooperate, good independence and perseverance. It is these characteristics and not breed that are crucial.
The dogs’ suitability is tested in special suitability tests where they need to get approved results. After that the dogs are educated and trained to perform the task.
The training consists of a special search training program where dogs are trained to distinguish / find and mark scent samples with infection from scent samples without infection, as these scents differ.
Technically, the training takes place in a so-called discrimination path where the scent samples are placed in containers, the dog passes the various scent samples, detecting with his nose the sample that contains the infection.
